The Sale Starts Tomorrow

Since I'm done with the first draft and letting the words stew a bit before I start editing, I thought this would be as good a time as any to have a sale.

Starting tomorrow, A Model Curse the trilogy (and complete series) will be available for less than $2.  Sleeping Ugly will be free through Saturday.  Ugly and the Beast and Cinder Ugly will be 99c each through next Monday.  Three books for $1.98.  Woohoo.

When a curse strikes a supermodel, all hell is gonna break loose.

Jeni Braxxon was raised to believe she wasn't good for much of anything but being pretty. Her career in modeling is on the rise until being cursed to turn ugly throws her world into chaos. Now, she has to learn who the culprit is and stop them, if only to get her pretty back. And along the way, she'll discover that what she was raised to believe isn't anywhere near the truth. There's more to Jeni than ever met the camera lens—something her enemies probably should've thought of before they starting messing with her.

They're also available on Kindle Unlimited and in paperback, if you're so inclined.

They're fun and they're snarky, but they also have a bit of heart and a sniffly place here and there.

The Last Sale Day for A MODEL CURSE

Today's the last day to get A MODEL CURSE in its entirety for only 99c/99p each.  Here's the verbiage (blurbage copied from my Amazon series page) that I posted to all the social media this morning:

Marketing is hit and miss when you're not paying for it.  As such, I haven't had a single sale from this effort.  Of course, after the first push and the crickets that ensued, I didn't post anything else until this morning, so I only have myself to blame.  We'll see if anything comes of today's push.

I might be able to squeeze some money out for a paid advertising sale next month.  But AMC is done for a little while - until the 90 day thing refreshes.  Maybe I'll do SCIU next.  Maybe I'll see what kind of sales I can get for Duke all by itself.  We'll see.

You know, I'm kinda surprised AMC hasn't been selling like hotcakes.  It's fun and snarky and all three books are quick reads.   I wish I knew.  Oh, well.  If you haven't read the series, you can get the whole thing today for less than the usual price of one.  If you like snark, you like this.  If you enjoyed my genie series, you'll enjoy this one, too.

If you've already read it, THANKS!  And if you haven't written a review yet, I'd really appreciate one.  :hugs:

A Model Curse - Sale

Good morning, Everyone.  I promised a sale and it's finally arrived.  Starting today and running through Sunday, the first two books of the 'A Model Curse' series are on sale for 99c/99p each.

Unfortunately, my brain is not in a place for zippy marketing stuffs.  I really should've done stuffs like that over the weekend, but I forgot and then this morning arrived and I am oatmeal - bland and uninspiring.  And I don't feel like I can do these books justice, because they are definitely neither bland nor uninspiring.

I mean, come on.  Jeni Braxxon, burgeoning supermodel, gets smacked with a curse that strips her beauty away every night.  Throughout the day, she gets better looking until WHAM, ugly, when midnight hits or she falls asleep, whichever comes first.  And she's got a lot to learn about herself, life, magic, etc. while trying to figure out who did this to her and how to stop them.

This review says it better than I can right now...  "Buy the whole series and enjoy Jeni's journey from shallow to swimming in the deep end of her emotions. Plus, talking cats and hellhounds. What's not to enjoy?!?!"

Anyway, these books were loads of fun to write and early results show they're loads of fun to read, so I hope you'll give them a whirl.

Updates and Junk

Okay, if you were waiting for the sale on the A Model Curse books, it starts Monday.  Yay.  SU and UatB will be 99c/99p each through 11:59pm on the 15th.  CU will sit at $3.99.

If you click that link, you'll see they've put the books together in a series now.  Yay.  If you're so inclined and have read the books, I'd appreciate a series review.

Let's look at those beautiful covers again...

Pissed Jeni, Resigned Jeni, Determined Jeni.  Although, to be fair, Jeni isn't all that resigned in UatB, but it was a good look for the cover.

Anyway, the books are fun and I hope you'll read them.

As for other writing stuff, I've been kinda derailed by all this election crap.  I'm trying to maintain my happy, but it's not often easy.   What I need to do is channel all this into some murders or something.  Create some evil villains and kill them off.  Maybe now would be the time to hit the next book in SCIU.

The idea there is someone is killing off the ones that got away from justice.  Same format at the others, so you know who the killer is and who the players are, and the suspense is in seeing the journeys of both the killer and the ones who hunt her.  I wrote the beginning years ago.  The rest?  We'll see if I can muster the gumption.  I guess, since it's November, now would be the perfect time to get my ass in gear.

We'll see.

How are you doing?  How are things going in your world?  If you're a writer, how's the writing going?  If you're not, are you struggling with gumption in your activities?

It's Alive!

Cinder Ugly went live last night while I was sleeping.  And now the trilogy is complete.  So, if you were waiting until you could get the whole series, it's available.  I will be having a sale on the first two books later this week - because reasons - so if you want to continue waiting until you can get those cheaper, I'll let you know when that's a go.

Otherwise, they're $3.99 each.

Sleeping Ugly - Book 1
Ugly and the Beast - Book 2
Cinder Ugly - Book 3

Aren't they pretty?  I hope to have a link to the series as a whole eventually.  (Amazon says they're working on it.)

Updates and Stuffs

I'm getting excited.  This is so close to being a real thing.  Since I already have a cover, all this is going to take is the final bits of editing and proofreading, and a blurb (gah, blurbs), and it'll be ready to send off into the world.  Woohoo!  and barf.

I really have no idea what I'm going to write for the blurb.  I'll have to put on my blurbing cap and hammer this out.  Soon.  :panics a little:

Speaking of blurbs, I'm not necessarily good at writing them, but I can spot a bad one for someone else's book like a laser guided missile.  And I've seen some stinkers lately.  They're usually written with either too much information or not enough.  When I'm looking for a book to buy, I need basic plot, main character, conflict.  I do not need to know their life story up to this point.  Probably something I should keep in mind when I write my own blurbs.

Oh, and for the love of all you find holy, PROOFREAD your blurbs before you post them in public.  Nothing turns me off of a book quicker than a blurb with errors that could've been fixed if the author had taken the time to go over the damn thing again.  If someone can't proof a paragraph or two, I can't hold out much hope for an entire book.  Harsh, but true.  Of course, I'm more forgiving in a manuscript.  60-100K words to proof is a lot harder than a couple paragraphs.

Over the weekend, someone read Blink of an I in KU.  This morning, there's a new rating for it on Goodreads.  A 3-star.  Which would bum me out except I hopped over to their page and it seems like all the books they read they give 3-stars or less.  I'm taking it as a win.  It's all about perspective. Anyway, I hope they enjoyed it enough to read Unequal next.

Speaking of Unequal, it'll be free for a few days next week.  And I set up a sale for the SCIU books for the week after.

Once I get an idea of publication dates and junk for Ugly and the Beast, I'll probably have a sale for Sleeping Ugly to kick off the release.  Woohoo.  I'm hoping for end of March, but time frames depend on other people and since other people are doing me a favor, I'm not pushing anyone for a speedy delivery.  They have lives, too, and their own work, and I'd be a shit if I was all like 'I need this yesterday'.  Cuz I don't.  It'll happen when it happens.  I'm totally chill.

While my beloved elves are busy marking up my manuscript, I'll be writing Cinder Ugly.  I posted the beginning of it over at Silver's blog on Wednesday, if you're interested.

Any questions?  Got anything you want to update the world about?  How's things?

Sleeping Ugly Sale

Time for another sale.  Actually, this one started Friday and runs through Halloween night.  But right now, Sleeping Ugly is on sale for only 99c (or 99p if you're buying in the UK).

Sleeping Ugly is the first in a trilogy - if I ever get the other two finished and published - but there's really not a cliffhanger ending there.  You can read this without wanting to stick a knife in my forehead.  Honest.

Right now, the series is in a bit of a circular limbo state, though.  It's hard to get motivated to work on the other two when the first isn't selling so well.  On the other hand, the first might sell better if I published the other two.  At this point, I'm looking at next year.  Book Two (Ugly and the Beast) is written all the way through.  Book Three (Cinder Ugly) is in the early stages of a first draft.

Anyway, SU is fun and snarky.  The people who have read it have loved it.  So, now's the time to give it a whirl.

Enjoy!

July Sale #3 - Sleeping Ugly

Yesterday, the sale for Blink of an I ended and the new sale began.  Right now, I've got Sleeping Ugly on sale for 99c in the US and 99p in the UK

The journey for Sleeping Ugly began years ago.  I was looking for something new to write in urban fantasy and something my older brother once said came to mind.  When I was a teenager, he was home on leave from the Air Force and just after I'd staggered out of bed, he said, "You're not Sleeping Beauty.  You're Sleepin' Ugly."

Needless to say, I'm sure I shot him the stink eye.  He was joking around, and I was probably totally not in the mood for it.  Even if he was probably right at the time.  Ugh, bed head.  Anyway, years later, the phrase popped into my head and along with it, the basic premise for the book - a supermodel is cursed and turns ugly while she sleeps.

She's got a brother.  He's totally not modeled on my brother at all.  Well, maybe a little of him hearkens back to my feeling for my brother on that long ago morning when, sans coffee because I was only like 16, I tumbled out into the living room and heard his words.  I actually like and appreciate my brother and he never did to me what Josh did to Jeni.  Plus, my bro is totally not evil.  He's a hard-working dude with two awesome sons.

Right now, I'm working on cleaning up the sequel to Sleeping Ugly - Ugly and the Beast. I got through the surface edits yesterday.  And I made a start on the third and final book, Cinder Ugly, last night.

Anyway, together for the first time ever, here's what the three of them will look like when the other two are published.  (Hoping to have UatB and CU done and released one after the other before the end of the year, but you know how things go.)
Warning: These are not safe for kids or for people with tender sensibilities.  Jeni swears.  A lot. But she's a good gal.  And the story is loads of fun.

I hope you'll give it a try and hang in there with me as I work to get the other two finished and published.  Thanks!

July is Sales Month

I went a little nuts yesterday morning.  Starting tomorrow, July 4th, at least one of my books will be on sale every day through the 29th in both the US and the UK.  (As long as Amazon doesn't brainfart.)

Here's how it shakes down:

July 4th - 10th - Project Hermes
July 10th - 16th - Blink of an I
July 16th - 22nd - Sleeping Ugly
July 23rd - 29th - Accidental Death and Natural Causes

All of them will be 99c/99p on their respective dates.  I'll let you know if I manage to secure advertising for any of them.  With the sale for PH coming so soon, there definitely will not be an ad for that one.  The others?  We'll see.

I do know I'll be doing my damndest to generate sales in other ways.  As unobtrusively as possible.  And, of course, as inexpensively as possible.  Which means I'll be busting my hump on FB.  A little twitter (which I hate, but it's there and I'm using it).

Not sure what'll be happening next month.  Probably another Once Upon a Djinn sale.  Maybe Unequal.  We'll see.  I can't think about August right now.  Gah, next month is August?!

Okay, back to the grind.  What have you got going on this month?

Stuffs

The reason I've been posting a lot about sales and marketing is that is all I'm doing right now.  No new words still.  No editing.  Just sales and marketing.  Which is better than nothing writerly, I guess.

The Sleeping Ugly sale ended last night.  It tanked.  The best thing to come out of it was that someone read the whole thing in KU and then started reading Wish in One Hand.  Sorta how that end-links thing is supposed to work.  Yay.  If that one person reads the entirely of the OUAD series, it will pay for the ad.  Also yay.

I've been spending some time thinking about writing.  Better than last month when I couldn't even do that.  Baby steps, I guess.  Although, it would probably help if my brain would stop skipping from one story to the next.  "I could do this with SCIU #4 and that with DH #3 and here's a page for that Arthurian UF and here's some lines for... and maybe if you did this with..." Stop it already.  Find a story and stick with it.

I saw on FB that my cover artist fell and crumpled herself.  Ack.  I have a spot with her next month for the third Ugly cover.  I don't need it next month (the book isn't even close to being written), but it was only spot she had available so I snapped it up.  She doesn't have any more open spots until sometime in 2020.  Anyway, I hope she gets better quick - and not just because I need her.  She's a super-cool person and really nice and she doesn't deserve to be laid up.

Is it just me or do other self-published authors have nightmares about stuff like that?  Artists and editors injuring themselves so they won't be there when we need them?  :shudder:

While I'm not writing or publishing, I'm hoarding fundage so that when the dam finally does break and I'm ready to put more books out into the universe, I'll be able to pay for them.  Or, you know, if my computer has a meltdown, I'll be able to get a new one.  That kind of stuffs.

Oh, and I'm putting the entire Once Upon a Djinn series on sale next month.  The 3rd through the 9th.  WIOH will be 99c/99p.  The rest will be $1.99.  I have an ad with Bargain Booksy going out on the 5th.  I might try doing some other advertising during that time.  Maybe I'll make the leap and try an Amazon ad.

I think that's about all the stuff for right now.  Any questions?  Comments?  Stuffs of your own?

On Sale. Finally.

Quick off-day post here.

Okay, so Amazon fixed the burp.  Sleeping Ugly is now on sale for 99c in the US.  And 99p in the UK.

I did have someone ask me yesterday whether it was on sale in Canada.  Unfortunately, no. Silly Amazon won't let us have Kindle Countdown Deals in any other countries besides the US and the UK.  I wish it could be different, but it isn't.  Sorry about that.

I wonder if I can just pick a day and discount the price in other countries while leaving it at $2.99 in the US/UK...  I'll research it and if it's possible, I'll give it a whirl.  I could always just drop the price across the board to 99c for a week or something.  Of course, if I do that, it won't be at the 70% royalty structure, which means I'll only get 35% of the prices.   Might be worth it to encourage readers in other countries.  A while back I had someone in Australia comment on not being able to pick up my book on sale, so there are people out there in the world who are hungry for some deals.

Anyway, if you haven't picked up a copy of Sleeping Ugly, now's the time to do it.  It'll be on sale in the US/UK through Tuesday night.

Sleeping Ugly Snippet

After a minor rewrite, which was approved by my editor with a stern admonition to stop rewriting things in this book, here's the set-in-stone* beginning of Sleeping Ugly.

Sleeping Ugly

Chapter One

It was morning. And I was ugly.

Imagine staggering past the bathroom mirror at the crack of eleven a.m. and catching a glimpse of a face even a mother mole rat couldn’t love when you’re used to something that graces billboards and magazines.  Considering every other day I woke up not ugly, which would easily turn into pretty after a gallon of coffee and convert into gorgeous with the judicious application of some war paint, it was the worst shock of my young life.

I think I screamed.  I know I dropped to the floor, half-afraid some gruesome creature had staged a home invasion while I slept.  But after several moments of sheer panic, where nothing reached through to snatch me, I mustered my courage and rose.  As I peeked into the mirror, the monster did, too.

When I moved, it moved.  When I frowned, it frowned.  When I ran a hand through my hair, its hand went through its scraggly mane.  No escaping the fact.  That face was mine.

I was ugly.  Ugg-Lee.  South end of a northbound goat ugly.  Beat with a brick and left for dead ugly.  Press my face in dough and make troll cookies ugly.

To make matters worse, I had no clue what the hell had happened.  Where could my loveliness have gone? And why?  Whyyyyy?

As I dredged my memories, I pressed my throbbing head against the cool glass and tried to figure out if I’d been in some kind of horrible accident and after several weeks in the hospital, they’d released me so the staff could eat a meal without wanting to hurl.

I came up with nothing.  And a glance at my phone showed I hadn’t lost so much as a day.  All I could recall was I’d gone to the city’s second trendiest nightclub, Spanky’s, the night before.  I’d danced a lot, drank a lot more, and gone home with the first available hottie.  Things got fun for a while and, afterwards, he’d gone on his merry way.  Like any number of other nights in a long string of pointless nights.

Somehow or other, I rolled over mid-morning the next day with the usual hangover and fuzzy tongue.  And as ugly as sin.  Which was definitely not usual.

Not the best outcome for Jeni Braxxon, twenty-two year old model, to be perfectly honest.

I had a photo shoot the following week, for petesakes.  I had an agent who kept promising me the cover of Vogue, if my career kept on the track she’d so carefully laid.  Sure, twenty-two is a bit old for a modeling career to take off, but I had hopes.  It had to take off.  It wasn’t like I possessed the skills to do anything else.  I’d managed to graduate high school without too sucktastic grades, but I was no Rhodes Scholar.  I’d gone to college for a semester and a half, but it wasn’t enough to get me a job above minimum wage.  And the minimum wage jobs I knew of?  Even on a good day, I’ve never been fit for fast food or retail sales.

I pushed myself back and took another good, long look at the face in the mirror.  Which ain’t easy when your eyes want to jump out and run away.  It hadn’t gotten any better, and I had to admit that now I wasn’t even fit for menial jobs.  Who would want to buy food or clothes from a hag?

As the reel of coming attractions and past faults played in my head, I threw a towel over the mirror, shut all the curtains, and prepared for life as a hermit.  I spent the first ten hours of my ugliness sequestered inside my apartment with the phone turned off and the door bolted.  I gathered up more towels and covered every reflective surface in my apartment.  It was like someone was sitting Shiva in there.

No way was I going to face my face again.  I couldn’t do it, and no one was going to make me.

Until that night when I attempted to get ready for bed.

Brushing your teeth is an interesting experience when you can’t see your mouth.  So I sucked it up and pulled the towel down.  Prepped for a glimpse of gruesome, I got the second shock of the day.  Other than looking like I had the roughest day of my young life, I was me again.  Same almond-shaped, beautiful blue eyes, if a little bloodshot.  Same killer complexion, if a bit pale.  Same luxurious blonde hair, if lifeless, messy, and needing a good styling.  That thing I’d seen growing on my nose, whatever it was, had disappeared.  My lips were plump and pouty again, instead of a cracked slash above my warty chin.  And the three beard hairs were gone.

Chalking the entire thing up to a lingering nightmare caused by the worst hangover ever, I swore off booze, turned my phone on to rejoin the world, and went to bed confident in my beauty.  I didn’t remember falling asleep.  I didn’t even remember dreaming.  I closed my eyes in the dark one minute and opened them the next in the soft light of dawn.

I didn’t even have to look at my reflection that time.  I knew.  I was ugly.  Again.  Ugh.

I wish I could say I experienced a tingle or a twitch.  Even a burning sensation in my nether regions would’ve been preferable, because it would’ve provided a warning.  Nope.  I got nothing.

Except ugly.  Overnight ugly.

At first, I totally doubted my sanity.  Nobody gets ugly overnight.  Then again, no one gets pretty throughout the day.  Either a person is always pretty, or they’re always ugly.

Which meant I’d had a psychotic break.  Either now or one earlier in my life I’d totally missed.  Neither option made me feel any better about myself.  Of course, the only other answer seemed just as crazy.  That I’d been cursed.

But magic isn’t real.  Curses don’t happen in real life—

Look for this to be out as soon as I can get it done and no later than the 29th (although I doubt it'll take me that long... barring disaster... knock on wood).  I'll splash links everywhere, so you won't miss it.

Meanwhile, go over to Goodreads and 'Want to Read' it.

*Unless someone finds a typo in there before it uploads to Amazon for publication. Or unless I missed a crutch word or two.  Or if I read it again before I've had adequate coffee and the sense to stop myself from tweaking it again.

Edited to add: I did it!  Sleeping Ugly went live on 8/18, like I said it would.

Coming Soon!

Okay, so for the past couple weeks, you've been seeing a coming soon thing over on the right there.  It's brown and it's boring, but it got the job done until I had a cover to show you.

Well, I have a cover to show you now!

And back cover copy!

Looks aren’t everything…  And curses aren’t real… Yeah, right.

Burgeoning supermodel, Jeni Braxxon is all about fun parties, cold drinks, and hot guys. But when she wakes up one morning as ugly as an infectious baboon’s butt, she understands how real this curse business can be. Too bad for Jeni, uncovering the existence of magic in her mundane world won’t uncover who cast this heinous spell or why. With the list of people she could’ve pissed off lately, the possibilities seem endless.

And as if she wasn’t already up shit’s creek, bigger worries keep slapping her upside her ugly head. Like her jerkstick brother’s disappearance, and why the police are trying to lay the blame at her pretty, pink feet. This is all way too much for a gal who lives by her looks, but she doesn’t really have any other choice. Higher stakes are on the line and, pretty damned cursed or not, she’s got to make it right.

Even if it kills her.
---------------------

I'm still on track to have this out on August 29th.  I'm hoping to get the edits completed in time to put it up for pre-order on the 18th, but that's iffy.  We'll see.

And I'll have a Goodreads listing up shortly.  Stop back later for a link so you can Want to Read it.  Here's the Goodreads link.

I really hope you guys like this one.  It's definitely snarky and fun.

Updates and Junk

Okay, so the ad on Wednesday was a bust.  I sold 5 copies of Project Hermes that day.  Which puts me about $45 in the hole for that one.  Eh, live and learn.  I didn't have any expectations for this, so I'm not crushed or anything.  I did start seeing page reads for it last night, so maybe there's hope.

On the bright side, PH went from 1.2 millionth in all books to 39K in all books and reached like 253rd in Technothrillers.  Not sure why Amazon put it there, but hey, it's kinda technothrillerish.  Also not sure how it went so high with only 5 sales.  I'm hoping a lot of KU readers downloaded it due to the ad.  Wouldn't that be lovely?

In other news, Early Grave got another 5 star review at Amazon.  Someone who'd reviewed both Dying Embers and Fertile Ground, so yay.

And both Accidental Death and In Deep Wish got new ratings at Goodreads.  Hey, I'll take what I can get.

I found a couple new (to me) advertising venues I'm going to try - one for strictly mystery/suspense and the other for just SF/F.  Unfortunately, they both require the books to have at least 10 Amazon reviews, so I only have a few books to choose from for advertising there.  I think Dying Embers later this month and Wish in One Hand sometime next month.   We'll see.

I have until no later than the 18th to get Sleeping Ugly whipped into better shape and back into my editor's hands.   I'm hoping for an August 29th release, so you'll have it your hands for reading over Labor Day weekend.  Provided I get the editing done and my cover artist gets the cover done and there's no floods, famines, pestilences, Armageddons, etc.  As we get closer to getting this published, I'll have a better idea of whether I'll make the date, go early, or completely fall apart.

And that's about it for updates.

Any questions?  Got any news of your own?

Sleeping Ugly... The Story Behind the Story

Years ago, when I was a teen, my middle brother was home on leave from the Air Force.  I remember staggering out of my bedroom one morning and hearing the words "Stop plucking your eyebrows like that.  You look like a..."  Wait... that's not the right story...

Another time, when he was home on leave, I stumble out of my bedroom and hear the words "You're not Sleeping Beauty.  You're Sleepin' Ugly."

My brother is funny that way.  And just so you know, he's my favorite brother* - witty comic statements and all.  (Actually, his witty statements are probably part of the reason he's my favorite.)

Flash forward about thirty years and the phrase came to mind one day when I was trying to decide what to write next.  Along with the phrase came the idea of a super model who gets cursed so that when she falls asleep at night, she turns ugly.

That's clever, but not enough to build a whole story around.  So I sat down and did some thinking.  She can't just turn ugly and be ugly.  It wasn't enough.  So I made the curse not stop there.  She gets better looking throughout the day until she's back to herself by the time she falls asleep (or midnight, whichever comes first) and then BAM!  Ugly again.  Every night.

But it's not just her.  The one night stand she was with the night the curse hit her got it, too.  Except his curse is slightly different.  He's ugly from sundown to sunup.  Which sucks for him because he works nights as a bouncer at a trendy nightclub.

And then the fun begins.  Who cursed them?  Was the curse aimed at her or at him?

And then, of course, I couldn't stop there.  I mean, that's probably enough of a pain in both their asses, but I threw another wrench in the machine and had the cops show up for something totally unrelated.  Or is it?

Bwa ha ha.

And all of this came about because sometime back in the '80s, my brother was being a wiseass.  So, yeah, I'm dedicating this book to him.  Because he gave me the title, and it's a wiseass kind of book.

I hope you enjoy it.

*Okay, so maybe he wasn't my favorite at the time.  He was just a jerk older brother then.  And that's okay.  Every teenage girl should have a jerk older brother.  It toughens you up a bit.  In fact, there's a jerk older brother in this book.  WAY worse than mine and still a jerk as an adult.  At least mine stopped being a jerk once we became adults.  (Or I got over myself and stopped perceiving him as a jerk.)

Fun Fun Fun

I'm making headway on Sleeping Ugly and I WILL have it ready for my editor on Friday.  Might be Friday night, but it will be FRIDAY.

Not sure what the mental hold up is this time.  It's a great story and it's loads of fun.  This one doesn't have anything that would make me hesitate to publish it.  It's just fluffy and enjoyable.  But I am dragging my feet.    Eh, you know me.  I'll work like a madman for the next three days and get it in under the wire.

Next week, I had planned to start the next book.  Then last night, I figured out how to wrap this up so that it doesn't NEED a next story.  I mean, I could still write more stories in this world if I wanted to, but without a need, I don't have the pressure of getting a book done this summer so it'll be publishable by this November, and then writing a third book so it'll be out in February.

Gah, just thinking about a schedule like that makes me want to hurl.

All I have to do is write a new end by Friday.  :panics:

Actually, the first thing I need to do is remember the new end I thought of while falling asleep last night.  That's more doable to me than writing two more books and having them ready to publish by early 2019.

Fun fun fun.

Anyway, that will probably mean the November book will, once again, be Unequal.  Yay.

And Therein Lies the Rub

I finished reading through Sleeping Ugly last night.  And I hate myself a little.  It ends.  But it doesn't end.  It needs sequels!

Like Wish in One Hand, I never intended for Sleeping Ugly to be a series starter.  And like WIOH, it appears that it's going to be a series whether I am prepared for it to be one or not.

And I am so not prepared for this to be a series.  I don't have clue one about what might happen in the next book.  I have zilch for ideas on a series title.  Or other book titles to go along with 'Sleeping Ugly'.  Nada.  Zip.  Gah.

So, here I've written this awesome book that's so fun and fast and interesting even I had a tough time ripping myself away from the story to make edit notes, a book that's due out in August, and I have no sequels lined up behind it.

The question now is: Do I stay on schedule and publish this in August knowing any sequels might not be quick in coming OR do I set this aside to write other books in the series so I can release them in sequence while I have my editor do Unequal for an August release?

Gah.

A Few Things

1)  I had my dates wrong for getting Early Grave back from the editor.  She said the 28th.  I had it written in my date book as the 26th, I assume because I had originally planned to have it to her on the 26th of January and so the return would be one month later.  Derp.  Anyway, we're still all on track for a late April / early May release.  It all depends on how much work there is to be done and whether life intervenes.  :fingers crossed:

2)  I posted a little snip of Sleeping Ugly over at Silver James' blog this morning.  (Edited to add: In the comment section.)  And reading it this morning reminds me that I still love it.  Look for it to be published by the end of summer, good lord willin' and the crick don't rise.

3)  If you don't remember, Sleeping Ugly is about a supermodel who gets cursed so she becomes ugly when she sleeps and then gets prettier throughout the day until she looks like herself right about the time she's ready to go to sleep again.  Oh, and there's a dude who got the curse, too, only he's normal throughout the day and ugly at night.  So they're working together to figure our who cursed them and fix this crap.  Then the cops show up to question her about the murder of her estranged brother...  It's weird and wild and fun.

4) But first, Early Grave.  Agent Ned Washington of the SCIU has been sent to Toledo to figure out if they have a serial killer who's murdering old people in nursing homes and then catch the heinous bitch.  If you read Fertile Ground, you might remember Ned from the scene when Teri first gets to the Detroit office.  If you've read either of the SCIU novels, you'll remember Lynn - the tech gal.  She plays an important role in this book.

That's about it for me this morning.  If I think of anything else, I'll let you know.

Things at OTB

First, the contest is still open on my Pick a Cover post.  Thus far, I have two votes for A on the blog, one private vote for C, and one private vote for either C or D.  (Yes, I will take private votes - especially if you're not interested in entering the contest.)  I'll most likely close it up on Friday and announce a winner on Monday.

Next, I'm 29% done on the read-through, note-making stage of Early Grave.  And I got with my editor, who will take the first round of EG when I'm ready to send it.  I'm hoping to get thru this phase by Saturday and then use the next two weeks to make all the changes, so I can have this to her after she finished up with Blink and the end of the month.

This year is on track.  So far.  Fingers crossed it stays this way.

My big sales extravaganza at the end of 2017 wrapped up the end of the year nicely.  Surprising since I didn't put any advertising in place for that one and only did some stuff on FB and Twitter.  That blog review really helped, although it wasn't planned or even expected until it happened.  Unfortunately, that's where the sales ended - last year.  I had kinda hoped for some residual stuff.  :sigh:

Anyway, I'm going to try not to worry about that stuff.  I mean, I'm still going to advertise when I can and junk, but I'm working on not sweating the lack of sales.  My books are out there.  More will be out there this year.  Different stuff, similar stuff.  Blink is definitely different stuff.  Early Grave is the third book in the SCIU series, but with Ned Washington as the main character.  Then I plan on publishing Sleeping Ugly - which is a paranormal but not djinn.  And if I can manage to get some inspiration somewhere and finish it, the third book in the Dennis Haggarty series should round out 2018.  If not, I might go ahead with another dystopian - Unequal.   Time will tell.

Those are about all the things I can think of at the moment.  Any questions?

Introducing Jeni Braxxon

Hey All!

On a whim this morning, I'm going to introduce you to my current heroine - Jeni Braxxon.  She stars in Sleeping Ugly, a paranormal mystery of sorts.

Now, I'm still peeling back Jeni's layers, so some of this might be subject to change...

It was morning and I was ugly.
Near as I can figure it, I pissed in the wrong witch’s pool at some point.  All I know is one night I went to Spanky’s, drank a lot, danced a lot, and went home with the first available hottie.  The next morning, I woke up cursed.
And ugly.  Did I mention ugly?
Not the best outcome for a twenty-two year old fashion model, let me tell you.  I had a photoshoot the following week.  I had an agent who kept promising me the cover of Vogue if I kept going the way I was.  Sure, twenty-two is a bit old for a modeling career to take off, but I had hopes.  It had to take off.  It wasn’t like I had skills to do anything else.  Even on a good day, I’m not fit for fast food or retail sales.  Like this, I’m not fit for even that.
Who wants to buy food or clothes from a hag?
I spent the first twenty-four hours of my ugliness trapped inside my apartment with the drapes drawn and the door closed.  After the initial shock of seeing myself, I threw towels over all the mirrors.  It was like someone was sitting shiva in there.  Until I tried to get ready for bed.
With nothing to do and nowhere to go, I opted for an early bedtime.  Brushing your teeth is an interesting experience when you can’t see yourself.  So I sucked it up and pulled the towel down.  Prepped for a glimpse of gruesome, I got the second shock of the day when a nearly normal me stared back.  Other than looking like I had the roughest day of my young life, I was me again.
Chalking it all up to the worst hangover ever, I swore off booze and went to bed, confident in my beauty.  I didn’t remember falling asleep.  I don’t even remember dreaming.  I closed my eyes in the dark one minute and opened them the next in the soft light of dawn.
I wish I could say I felt a tingle or a twitch.  Even a burning sensation in my nether regions would’ve been preferable, because it would’ve provided a warning.  Nope.  I got nothing.
Except ugly.  Overnight ugly.
At first I totally doubted my sanity.  Nobody gets ugly overnight.  Then again, no one gets pretty throughout the day either.  Either a person is always pretty or they’re always ugly.
Psychotic break now or one earlier in my life—neither option made me feel any better about myself.  Of course, the only other answer seemed just as crazy.  Magic isn’t real.  Curses don’t happen in real life…
Unless they do.

I hope to have the first draft done by the end of the month and then in my editor's hands sometime after Wish Hits the Fan goes live in September.  (Or whenever JC gets the final edits to me, if that's feasible at the time.)  We'll see.
