Making an Effort

In an attempt to do something, I'm making an effort to market again.  Not sure whether anyone knows this, but DYING EMBERS is only 99c and is now available from a variety of retailers.

Anyway, here's the marketing copy I posted a short while ago*...

It's been ages since I did any marketing, so here goes...

When a string of deaths is linked together by a killer’s fiery signature, Agent Jace Douglas must face her fears and track down a murderer before another man is burned alive.

DYING EMBERS is available now from a variety of retailers for only 99c. Pick up your copy today!

With, ya know, this pretty pretty cover...

Anyway, I figured it was about time I got off my buns and tried to sell some books. I'll market some more later this morning. You know, after I get some sleep and have a cup of coffee... or five. ;o)

*No, this post wasn't scheduled. I was up at midnight. And since I was up, I figured I might as well do some marketing before my inner Piglet took over again.

Kind of a Cascading Sale Thing

Okay, so I totally forgot to post here on Wednesday.  Which is kinda stupid of me, since I had a sale start on Wednesday.  Oh, I did all the marketing posts to FB and MeWe, but not here.  Derp.

Anyway, here's the deal...

DYING EMBERS is on sale now.  99c if you're in the US.  99p if you're in the UK.  This sale will last through to the 16th.  Then FERTILE GROUND goes on sale for 99 through the 23rd.  Then EARLY GRAVE goes on sale for 99 through the 2nd of March.

  I'm trying something there.  Kind of a cascading sale thing.  Of course, I think the sales for FG and EG would be dependent on sales for DE, and so far it's been crickets for DE.  I'm not holding out a lot of hope.

But hey, you can't win if you don't try.  Right?

In other news, I've been so wrapped up in preparing for and worrying about the weather (it's frigid now and they're predicting 3-9 inches of snow for next week), I haven't used much brain power to actually work.  That's my story and I'm sticking to it.  One would think because I'm stuck inside, it would be the perfect time to work.  Umm, nope.

Hopefully, now that we're as prepared as we're going to get, I can settle down and work.  I need to poke myself in the ass and just get it done.  Sheesh.

Cyber Monday? That Means Sale Time Again

A lot of you will be doing some online shopping today, but I won't.  I'm doing the selling.  Well, kind of selling.  You see, DYING EMBERS is free worldwide today through the 3rd.  FERTILE GROUND and EARLY GRAVE are the ones on sale (US and UK only).  Get those two now thru the 5th for only 99c/99p each.

So, now's the time to pick up a copy of one or all of them.  Get them for yourself.  Gift them to your friends and family.  Spread the suspense and the justice around.  See the bad guys get what's coming to them.  It's good fun for everyone.  (Given the proper maturity level, of course.)

Read along while Jace tracks a serial killer bent on fiery revenge, Teri chases a serial rapist with a god complex, and Ned hunts down an Angel of Death who's no angel at all.  Agents who have to face their own fears and regrets to do their jobs and stop some nasty characters.

Like I said, good fun.  ;o)

Sale Time Again - SCIU Edition

Ack, it's Wednesday.  I should've already written and scheduled this post.  Derp.

Anyway...

I know you've all heard this before, because, like, you're my regulars, but just in case someone stops by who hasn't been hanging around...  All of the SCIU books are on sale starting today.

Here's what went up on FB this morning:
Tales from the files of the Serial Crimes Investigation Unit. Standalone novels connected by a common purpose - tough heroines and heroes hunting down serial criminals wherever they prey on the innocent.
On sale starting today! 99c/99p each. (Always free with Kindle Unlimited.) Buy one or buy them all.
US: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B078MQ9RX9
UK: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07CNRVNXH
#suspense #ebooks #SCIU #99c #99p #reading #entertainment #fun #serialkillers #murder

Fingers crossed it generates some sales.  I'm sitting at almost 16 books sold this year for about $16.  This, as you know, is not good.  I mean, of course, it's better than a sharp stick in the ear, but yeah.  And yeah, I'd probably sell more if I paid for advertising, but you know how it goes.

Now, back to your regularly scheduled lives.

Happy Valentine's Day to You! Happy Anniversary to Me!

Happy Valentine's Day to all of you.  But it's Happy Anniversary to me.  Not wedding.  That's not for a few months yet.  Nope, it's the 5th anniversary of the day I published Dying Embers and really began this self-publishing thing.  (Okay, I actually hit publish on the 13th, but I'm celebrating today.)  Five whole years of having my books available for sale.

And this is around the time when I started what would become my first finished novel back in 2004, so that's what... sixteen years.  Ugh.  :shakes self:

If I'd been savvy about this, I would've had a big to-do with prezzies and stuff for my readers.  But I wasn't.  Oh, the genie books are on sale and junk, but that wasn't planned with the anniversary in mind.  It didn't even occur to me until this past Tuesday that it was even something to take note of.  (Which is really too late to plan anything special.)  I could've had a contest or something.

Five years, thirteen books, and 3016 sales later, here I am.  After all the highs and all the lows, I'm still plugging away.  I really am.  Seriously.  I'm working on getting Ugly and the Beast to a place where I can send it out for proofreading and then eventual publication.  And I'm trying to work on writing Cinder Ugly.  (Not going so well, but I'm trying.)

Anyway, I hope you have a great Valentine's Day with whoever you love.  I'll be here with my loving Hubs and my geriatric cat.  We don't really celebrate the day, other than wishing each other a happy day and doing the hugs/smoochies thing.  I probably won't really celebrate the anniversary either, but it'll be on my mind.

Five years.  Whoda thunk it?  Not me.

Do you celebrate Valentine's Day?  Or do you only celebrate the day after when all the chocolate goes on sale?  Do you have any big anniversaries coming up?

Merry Christmas! Here's a Present!

Since my writing is really the only gift I have to give, starting today the book that started it all, DYING EMBERS, is free.  (And the other two SCIU books - FERTILE GROUND and EARLY GRAVE - are only 99c.)

DE is free through Saturday.  FG and EG are on sale through Monday night.  Grab one or grab them all.  Send them as gifts to friends and family.  If you already have them, thank you so much.  Your support means the world to me.  I wish I had a prezzie to give you, too.  :hugs:

Merry Christmas to you and all of your loved ones.  Here's to a Happy New Year for us all.

SCIU Sale

All three of the books in the Serial Crimes Investigation Unit series are on sale starting today and running through 11:59p PST (US) or GMT (UK).  99c/99p each.

Buy one or buy them all.

The SCIU series US
The SCIU series UK

Dying Embers US
Dying Embers UK

Fertile Ground US
Fertile Ground UK

Early Grave US
Early Grave UK

All of them are also available through the Kindle Unlimited program, so that's over a thousand pages of suspense for free with your subscription.  Jus' sayin'.

If you haven't read any of them, they're stand alone novels with the SCIU organization tying them together, and a bit of information from Dying Embers in Fertile Ground and Early Grave (and a bit from Fertile Ground in Early Grave).  But yeah, new main characters, new plots, fresh faces with a bit of the old, familiar mixed in.

They were a ton of fun to write and from what I've heard, they're a ton of fun to read, too.  If you haven't read them, now's the budget-friendly time to give them a whirl.  I hope you enjoy them as much as I do.

And I know it's horribly teasing of me to talk about it, especially when I'm in a writing dry spell, but I do have plans for a fourth book.  Maybe next year?  I have the plot - someone is killing the criminals the SCIU went after who got off on technicalities - but no title yet.  Stick with me, folks.  I ain't done yet.

Technical Difficulties

I was all prepared to post about the sale I'm having for the Serial Crimes Investigation Unit series, but in getting ready for the hoopla, I noticed something's not quite right.  Currently, Amazon is showing Dying Embers at $0.00.

Gah.

Good thing I check prior to actually marketing.  Fertile Ground and Early Grave are showing correct at $1.99 each, which is good, but the flagship of the series is Dying Embers.  Can't market the whole series if the first book is wrong.  And right now, I'm not sure if someone one-clicking the book will get it free or wind up paying 99c when they thought it was free.  Either way, it's a pretty bad way to have a sale.

I've contacted Amazon.  So far, they've been pretty good about getting things fixed when I've contacted them.  Hopefully today's error will be fixed quickly, so I don't lose too many marketing days.

I assume everything is okay on the UK site.  They won't show me pricing there because it's not my country.  Which is weird because I can see pricing on the sites for other countries.   If you happen to be able to see pricing in the UK and see it as free, let me know.

Ah, life and it's occasional technical difficulties.

Anyway, if you've already read DE, pick up a copy of Fertile Ground and/or Early Grave at $2 off.  I can tell by the way page reads go that they're real page-turners.  (I always thought so, but it's nice to have it confirmed by other people.)

Meet The Three Wise Agents

The Three Wise Agents...

Jace Douglas in Dying Embers.  After losing her family to a blaze when she was a teen, she's terrified of fire.  But she won't let her fears stop her from catching the Car-B-Que Killer.

Teri Buchanan in Fertile Ground.  With a serial rapist/killer hunting Southeast Michigan, she fights against the trauma of her own attack to bring a sick bastard to justice.

Ned Washington of Early Grave.  Haunted by the memories of his own grandmother's mistreatment and death, Ned will find and stop the psycho responsible for ending the lives of the elderly before their times have come.

These guys aren't carrying gifts, but they are on a mission.  To see justice done.

Get the whole SCIU series for under $5 today.

SCIU Sale

Hey, All.

Just a quick note to let y'all know that the SCIU (Serial Crimes Investigation Unit) series books are on sale this week.  99c here in the US and .99p in the UK.

There'll be an ENT ad going out today for Dying Embers.  If you already have DE, now's the time to grab the others.

If you're not familiar with the SCIU series, each book stands alone and centers on a different main character within the same law enforcement agency.  They all have the same general theme - an agent dealing with a case that is personally difficult for them (even though Ned in Early Grave doesn't really realize it until near the end) and a villain with a psychotic reason for their actions.

And, yes, the bad guys always get what's coming to them in the end.  I don't write books where the bad guys win.  Ever.

So, anyway, thank you to everyone who's already bought and read the books.  Super special thanks to those that also left a review.

Now, back to your regularly scheduled lives.  ;o)

Early Grave Cover Reveal

Because I'm short of things to say today without ranting like a crazyperson, I thought I'd share what I have for the cover of Early Grave.  Not looking for suggestions here, just sharing.
And here's the series all together.
I think they look good as a set.  And I think I did a good job keeping series continuity, considering I did not do the first cover.  But that's me.

Anyway, still shooting for late April.  In fact, if I keep to previous timeframes it might be more like mid-April.  Wouldn't that be super?

Happy Bookiversary to Me!

Today's the official 2nd anniversary of the publication of my first self-published novel - Dying Embers!  Yay, I made it two years with most of my sanity intact.  (Well, what little of it there was to begin with.)

To celebrate, I've got Dying Embers and Fertile Ground on sale for 99c each in the US and .99p in the UK from now until Saturday.

AND

I'm running contests on my Facebook Page today.  Go over there and Follow the page, if you haven't already, and join in the fun.  The first one up is for a $10 Amazon gift card and all you have to do is comment on the post.  The FB thing?  I cancelled it.  Only one person than me even 'liked' it and no one commented.

Right here, right now?  Well, all you have to do is comment and get in the running for a paperback copy of Dying Embers or Fertile Ground (your choice).

Continuity

As I spent part of this weekend formatting Fertile Ground for publication, I thought I'd spend some time this morning talking about continuity... a word I'm having a tough time typing this morning, so bear with me.

CONTINUITY

Fertile Ground is the second book in the SCIU series.  While I was formatting it, I knew I wanted it to have a similar look to the Dying Embers manuscript.  After all, I went through a lot of effort to have continuity in the covers, so I should also spend some time making certain the look of the insides flows.  (I did this for the Once Upon a Djinn series, too, I just didn't think to talk about it until now.)

Continuity... The titles and author name should have the same font, the same font size, and should be the same with regard to italics and bold.  As should the chapter headings.  And copyright verbiage (with the exception of the year - if your series titles were published in different years).  If you have acknowledgements, those can differ in wording, but not look.

I also put a little 'Special Note' at the bottom of the same page about 'this is the second book in the series and if you want to know more about the other book, go here' with a link to the newly created SCIU page on my blog.

If you have a certain thing you use for scene breaks in one book of a series, you should use the same thing for the scene breaks in every other book in a series.  I used ~~~~~ in Dying Embers, so I used that in Fertile Ground, too.

At the end of the book, I put the same About Author page in both books and then added a page about the SCIU series and a blurb from the other book.

What does any of this matter?  Well, I'm not exactly certain.  I hope that when someone reads one book, they'll hop over to read the other and a certain continuity between the two will be a welcome thing for the reader.  I think it also might add a professionalism to the series.

You tell me.  As a reader, do you care?  As a writer, do you bother?  Or am I just wasting my time when I should be getting this into readers' hands?

Free Weekend - The Aftermath

Okay, so it's only been a week since I did the free weekend thing for Dying Embers.

Now, it seems anti-intuitive to make money by giving books away.  At least to me.  But the popular advice around the self-publishing interwebs is that making a book free can increase sales - not only for the book but for other books you may have out.

So, here's how it shakes out for anyone else who might be a doubting Thomas like me:

I gave away approx. 2500 copies of Dying Embers worldwide on February 13th & 14th.  Prior to that weekend, I had not sold a single copy of DE and only 3.39 other books in the month of Feb.  In January, I only sold 6 copies of DE and 15 copies total for all 4 books.  Starting with that weekend to this morning, I have moved 15 copies of DE and 4 copies of Accidental Death - both thru sales of either book and pages read for DE (since AD is currently out of the Kindle Select program and is unavailable for Kindle Unlimited.)

This is all without any additional advertising.  (I do have advertising going out tomorrow, so that might skew any more sales data from the 'free weekend' thing.)

In addition to hard-number sales, though, I have seen an uptick in interest.  The rankings for all 4 books is up, which is always good.  And I've seen an increase in reviews and ratings for DE.

Before the free weekend, Dying Embers had 20 reviews on Amazon. Now it has 21.  One seems like a minor addition, but it was a 5-star, so I'll call that a win.  Also, DE had 31 ratings and 16 reviews on  Goodreads.  Today, it has 38 ratings and 17 reviews.  The review was a 5-star.  The ratings? Not exactly sure, but I do know a couple were 5, a couple were 3, and I got my first 1-star.  (Not every book is for every person.)

Okay, so I'm not burning up the bestseller lists, but this definitely makes me way more hopeful than I was at the beginning of the month.  And I hope my experience here helps you make a decision when you're thinking about whether to do a free day or weekend or whatever.

Analyzing This Past Free Weekend

So, Dying Embers was free the 13th (its 1-year book birthday) and the 14th (Valentine's Day - perfect for the scorned singles).

Here are the hard numbers:

On Saturday, I moved 1960 copies.

16 in Canada
1 in France
2 in Germany
24 in the UK
1917 in the US

This got Dying Embers to #1 in the Top 100 Serial Killer list, #4 in the Top 100 Crime list, #25 in Top 100 All Mystery/Suspense/Thrillers, and #92 in all Free Kindle books (all of those are the top FREE lists).  It also encouraged someone to read 198 pages of DE for the Kindle Unlimited program.

I didn't pay for any advertising here.  I just posted it on FB - on my personal page and my author page.  I tweeted about it.  And I posted about it on three FB groups - Amazon Kindle Goodreads, Free Kindle Books, and Free Books for Kindle UK.  Plus, some lovely people shared my posts and tweets.

So far, it's gained me one new 5-star review on Amazon and one new 5-star rating on Goodreads (by two different people, which is cool.  I don't know either person.

They like me.  They really like me.

Yes, I had a Sally Field moment there.

On Sunday, I moved 471 copies.

23 in Australia
2 in Italy
2 in Japan
5 in Canada
1 in France
4 in Germany
13 in the UK
421 in the US

When I went to bed last night, Dying Embers was #1 in Free Serial Killers, and #102 All Free.  This morning, it's at #149 in Paid Serial Killers and #62,512 All Paid - which is definitely a step in the right direction.  (Especially considering that before the free weekend, DE was over 350,000 in All Paid and some non-essential number in Serial Killers.)  Also, someone read 131 more pages in KU. Not great, but better than a sharp stick in the ear.

No movement for the other books yet.  But there's hope.

Anyway, I'm thrilled for the chance to gain some new readers.  And hopefully, everyone who reads DE will be excited for the release of Fertile Ground in May.

I hope all that's helpful for anyone wondering how 'free' helps sales.  I'll do a follow-up next week, probably.  Any questions?

Merry Christmas!

I hope you're all having a wonderful Christmas morning and that you got everything you wanted from Santa.

To help in that endeavor, I decided to make all my books 99 cents each. From tomorrow through New Year's Eve.  Yep, every single one.  If Santa brought you a new Kindle, or an Amazon gift card, or you got them for someone else, now's the best time to pick up a copy of any of the four - Dying Embers, Accidental Death, BloodFlow, or Wish in One Hand.  Or if you've been given a Nook or some other ereader, and don't want to use the Kindle app, Wish in One Hand is also available through Barnes & Noble, Kobo, or Apple.

(This special pricing on DE, AD, and BF is for US and UK residents both.  Sorry about everyone else, but Amazon only lets me do so much. WIOH should be low-priced everywhere.)

Oh, and if you're a Kindle Unlimited Subscriber,  Dying Embers, Accidental Death, and BloodFlow are available for you to read with your subscription.

So, enjoy today with your family.  Eat lots. Have fun. Read tomorrow while you're recovering.  ;o)

Merry Christmas, Everyone.  (Even if you don't celebrate, I wish you the merriest of days.  Because, hey, who doesn't want to have a merry day?)

Thoughts on Book Piracy

Over the weekend, I discovered that Dying Embers has been pirated.  I spent a chunk of time on Saturday contacted sites to get it removed.  I searched again on Sunday and found more sites where you can now download the PDF of my book for free.  One place showed over 600 downloads - which is more copies than I've sold to date.  If those had been paid for, I would now have $1200+ and be able to fund another book's art and editing without having to dip into our retirement funds or cut back on the grocery bill.

But let's forget that for a second.  Let's say, for instance, that those people would not have purchased my book anyway.  I mean, I had a free day back in March and way more people snagged a copy on that one day than bought the book in the first three months of its existence.  People like free stuff.  Hell, there've been times in my life when I wouldn't have read a new book if it hadn't been free.  You know, times when I was scraping by, hoarding my pennies so I could afford to pay editors and artists and... Never mind.

The thing about giving a book away for free is that there's a certain level of hope that those free copies will generate buzz, and book reviews, and boosts in the rankings to help sell books.  It's the reason we do it.  We give, you give, it's all good.

But then you take what was a free book for one day, you upload it to a site where it's free all the time.  And those readers don't even bother to give a little somethin-somethin in return.  No buzz.  No reviews. No boost.  How is that equitable?

Now, some people get their undies in a bunch over piracy.  Personally, it depresses me, but I look at it as part of doing business on the internet.  You put stuff out there without lock & key, and someone somewhere will steal it.  Others actually say it's good for business.  They claim they see an uptick in sales after a book's been pirated.  I don't have sufficient data to back up or deny that claim.

You know, folks, I ain't rich.  I don't do this writing thing for my health.  Sure, I want people to read my books and enjoy them.  The more the better.  But I deserve to get paid for the effort.  Just like you wouldn't want someone coming up to you and making you work endless hours for nothing, writers don't want that either.  If you're unable or unwilling to purchase books for whatever reason, at least leave a dime on the dresser by writing a review, chatting up the book to people with money, or whatever.

Don't worry.  I'm not quitting.  There are enough conscientious and honest readers out there who are willing to save their pennies and buy my stuff that those others are a blip.  Still, that $1200 would've gone a long way to putting more books out there for the world to enjoy.  No income = no new books.  I can't keep funding this cycle any other way.

Sidenote: Oddly enough, Accidental Death isn't pirated as far as I can tell, but I haven't offered that one for free.  As such, I probably won't offer another one of my books for free again.  If you were one of those honest people who would've liked to read my books, but couldn't afford it, thank the pirates for that decision.

I mean, it's three freakin' bucks, people.  If reading is important to you, find a way to buy a book rather than download it from some site where the author isn't getting paid.  And FYI, as of 8/1/15, no site other than Amazon has any of my ebooks - not with my permission anyway.

'Nuff said.

Advertising to The Non-Kindle World

I don't know if all y'all realize that Dying Embers is now available pretty much everywhere* books are sold online.  Using Draft2Digital, the electronic version has been uploaded to all the big, non-Amazon names, as well as a few I've never heard of:

Barnes & Noble
Kobo
Apple

Page Foundry (Inktera)
Tolino
Oyster

Which is all well and good.  I like everyone to be able to snag a copy of my book if they so choose.

The problem, of course, is letting everyone know they can now get Dying Embers through whatever outlet they choose to use.  I mean, I can put it here and on FB, and tweet about it.  But that only reaches those people who already know about me. :waves:

So, I went searching for ways to advertise to those other markets.  When I go looking for ways to advertise to Kindle users, Google is chock-full of places.  The others?  Not so much.

Oh, I can get some non-Amazon advertising piggybacked on those sites geared for Kindle people.  Some of them allow for links to other vendors.  But since the site is focused on Kindle readers, not a lot of others head over there to look for books.  The plethora of book sites for other devices just isn't there.

Amazon holds about 60% of the ebook market (depending on where you're getting your numbers) and it's not hard to see why based on this search I've been doing.  There's just more ways for people to find your books when you're published through Kindle.  Which is kind of sad.  Of course, Amazon also makes it way easier to actually publish a book, make your book visible, get you sales data...  But that's a post for another day.  Perhaps if B&N tried some of the things that make Amazon so popular, they'd have a bigger marketshare and more books would be published through them.

So, anyway, I'm still looking.  If I find anything, I'll let y'all know.

Now it's your turn.  Do you have some other device besides Kindle that you read books on?  How do you find new books?  And if you're a Kindle user, what's your go-to place to find new books?

*I recently chose to delist the book from Scribd. Not really keen on some of the things I've heard about them. I hadn't gained any sales from them anyway, so no measurable loss on my part. If you're a Scribd subscriber, I apologize for any inconvenience.

Checking In With the Numbers Again

Hey folks!

It's been a while since I checked in and gave you the numbers on this wild ride. Keep in mind that this is me.  Your mileage may vary.

115 days since I launched Dying Embers and got my first pre-order (February 12th through yesterday)

In that time, I sold* 366 copies of DE at various prices.  I've also sold 46 copies of Accidental Death., bring to the total of all books sold to 412.

That's an average of 3.58 books a day.

My biggest sales day was after my ad went live on Ereader News Today.  I sold 129 books that day, and saw a nice follow-through that kept me in the rankings for 10 days.  My best sales ranking was #9 on the Kindle Suspense/Serial Killers list.

Dying Embers currently has 10 reviews and 18 rankings on Goodreads with a 4.39 star average.  It has 13 reviews on Amazon with a 4.8 star average.

Accidental Death currently has 1 review and 2 rankings on Goodreads with a 5 star average.  No reviews at Amazon.

In its first partial month, Dying Embers sold 26 copies.  Accidental Death sold 40 in its first partial month.

To date, I've spent about $1600 on Dying Embers and about $650 on Accidental Death.  Not quite sure what that means yet. I do know a $30 ad gained me the most sales, but since DE was .99 through most of that sales spike, it didn't gain me that much fundage. Later this month, I will try an ad for AD and I'm looking into other advertising venues that won't break the bank.

I'm not breaking any records here, but I'm pleased.  If this stays on track, our goal of this venture funding itself within the first year should be met.  It depends on how much I spend putting each book out there and how sales for the subsequent books go.  When the third book launches in August, we'll have an even better idea - but the third book is a different genre - paranormal suspense - so it might skew things a bit.  We'll see.

So, there are the numbers for one debut, self-published, independent novelist.  Hope that helps those of you thinking about jumping into the fray and that it provides some insight into this world for you readers.  It ain't easy.  It certainly ain't guaranteed.  But damn, it's fun.

Any questions?  As always, I'll answer what I can.

*Sales are primarily Amazon and include Kindle Unlimited borrows and regular ebook sales.  A small percentage of those numbers are hand sales of paperback copies and wider ebook distribution through Draft2Digital.
