Just in time for Christmas...  All of the Once Upon a Djinn book are now available at many of your favorite retailers.  Here are the universal links:

Wish in One Hand
In Deep Wish
Up Wish Creek

Some of the retailers aren't quite ready yet, so if you don't see the one you prefer, check back.  I've also added the links for Amazon and Amazon print to make things easier for everyone.

I've also uploaded Rumor Has It, but I'm not seeing any links for that yet.  Soon, I hope.

Anyway, have a Merry Christmas!  See ya Monday.

It's Sale Time Again

Woohoo!  With Halloween fast approaching, what better time for a sale on the Once Upon a Djinn books?  They're full of paranormal awesomeness.  And snark.  And mystery.  All wrapped up in a four-book series.

Wish in One Hand
In Deep Wish
Up Wish Creek
Wish Hits the Fan

99c/99p each.  Less than $4/£4 each.  If you haven't read them all, now's your chance to get them way cheaper than you would on any regular day - when they're $3.99 each.  Save yourself $12.

I love these books.  You can, too.  =o)

Sale Time Again

Staring today all of the books in the Once Upon a Djinn series are on sale for 99c/99p each through next Tuesday night.  Get the whole damn series for less than $4.  (Always free with Kindle Unlimited.)  See where Jo starts out and where she ends up, with many twists and turns and snarks along the way.

There's no paid advertising for this sale, so any sales are strictly reliant on how much interest I can drum up here and on FB.  As we all know, having a sale without having advertising is pretty much crickets, so I'm not expecting great things.  If I sell a couple of each, that would be awesome.  And if I get page reads, too, that would be more awesome.

I'll be trying to have a sale on the SCIU books again next month.  We'll see how that goes and whether the advertising budget can cough up enough for a paid ad.  You know the drill... you have to spend money to make money to spend money to make money... ad infinitum.  Since I haven't spent any money I haven't made any money to spend.  Bleh.

Anyway, I know most of the people who stop by here have already picked up their copies of OUAD and enjoyed them.  Thank you again for all your support.  It means the world to me.

And if you haven't yet read the genie books, now is your chance to get them cheap.  I hope you give them a try and enjoy the hell out of them.  =o)

It's Sale Time Again!

Wednesday, the entire Once Upon a Djinn series went on sale - 99c US/99p (UK) each.  That's a $12 savings there, folks. (Always free with Kindle Unlimited, of course.)
Advertising will go out Sunday, but the sale is going on until Tuesday night.  Shop early, shop often.  And they're all available in paperback, so if you want to hold them in your hands and see them on your shelves, there they are.

If you're not familiar with the series, it follow genie Jo Mayweather - who has made it her mission to rescue her fellow genies from the slavery of being tied to a Master - as she tries to figure out who is killing genies and then finds out there's a whole weird plot to ruin her life.  Or so she thinks.  There's action, adventure, suspense, mystery, and whole lot of magical goings-on.  Plus a little divine intervention and a host of otherworldy beings.  Jo's got issues and snark and a backbone.

All in all, a fun series to read.  And it was a fun series to write.  I hope you enjoy it.

The August Genie Sale

Time for another sale - this one with paid advertising.  All four Once Upon a Djinn books are on sale right now (through Friday night).

Wish in One Hand - 99c
In Deep Wish - $1.99
Up Wish Creek - $1.99
Wish Hits the Fan - $1.99

Get the whole complete series for less than $7.  (Always free with Kindle Unlimited.)  Yep, it's complete.  The arc wraps up in book 4.  Promise.

Read one or read them all.  And if you've only read part of the series, now's the time to finish it.  (I wish I could coax the one less-than-stellar reviewer of In Deep Wish to finish the series, so she can see her comments there don't hold true across the series.)

The ad goes live tomorrow with Ereader News Today for Wish in One Hand.  It's going out in the Fantasy section this time.  My only other choice was to put it in Paranormal/Romance, but there's no romance in this.  So, we'll see if having it the Fantasy section this time shows better sales.

If you read them, I'd really appreciate a review.  Once you've read the series, it would be awesome and super helpful if you could jot a review down at the series page.

AND if you enjoy them, give Sleeping Ugly a whirl.  There are two more books in the hopper for that series.  Honest there are.  And I promise I'm actually working on them.  I'd like to promise they'll be out later this year, but some things have to align in the universe - things I have no control over - before I can promise anything.

Anyway, thanks everyone for your support in all this, and if you're new to Once Upon a Djinn, thanks for stopping by.  I hope you download them and enjoy the hell out of them.

Once Upon a Djinn Sale

Hey, Folks.

All this week, the Once Upon a Djinn books are on sale.  You can get all four books for under $7.  Or if you've already read some, or don't want to foot the bill for the whole series, here's how they break down (in series order):

Wish in One Hand - 99c
In Deep Wish - $1.99
Up Wish Creek - $1.99
Wish Hits the Fan - $1.99

That's more than half off the regular ebook list prices.  We won't go into how much less that is than the print versions.  Hooee.

Anyway, they're a boatload of fun to read if the reviews are anything to go by.  I know I enjoyed writing them.

Updates and Advertising Stuff

Okay, so I got the edits for Wish Hits the Fan yesterday afternoon - well ahead of the expected date of 9/4, so yay.  (I was thinking 3 weeks, she was thinking 2 weeks, so it went quicker than I thought.)  This, of course, means I have to figure out if I'm going to 1) work exclusively on that, or 2) work on that and Early Grave at the same time.

I hadn't decided by last night, so I took the night off.  (Which is fine.  I have until next Tuesday to clean up WHTF, format it and get it loaded for pre-order.  Easy-peasy.)

Today, I'm still not sure what I'll do.  All I know right now is that I have to get some advertising in place for the series in the general timeframe of my release on 9/15.  I've got the first book set up as Free from 9/14-9/18, and the next two as 99c from 9/14-9/21.  This morning I sent an ad request* to Paranormal & Urban Fantasy Bargains for all three of those.  (They're running a special right now, 2 days for $3.)

I've also made a spreadsheet of all the advertising venues I'm aware of and their costs, so I can figure out where to best spend my money.  Go for the high dollar ads and hope they accept my submission?  Stick with the lower cost ones that are more likely to accept my books?  Try both and hope I don't over extend myself?  Did I leave all this to too late again?  Gah.

This might be why I get burned out...  Hmmm...

Anyway, I'll get 'er done.  Wish Hits the Fan will be live on September 15th, and the other books will be on sale then, too.  WHTF will be $2.99, so you could conceivably get the whole series for under $5.  (free+.99+.99+2.99 = 4.97...Yep. It's early yet and the coffee hasn't kicked in.)

So, spread the word.  Buy the books.  Leave reviews.  I'll be eternally grateful.  I'll even send out some swag if you let me know you've been talking up my books...

Oh, crap.  I have to make bookmarks and postcards...

:runs screaming into the dawn:

* Do not do work before the coffee has kicked in.  I sent the wrong dates on the request for Wish in One Hand.  But the gal there is nice, so she should be okay when I tell her I fucked up.

Crutch Words

Hello!

As I said yesterday on The Writing Spectacle, I have crutch words.  To most, these are words writers use on a regular basis in place of better, richer words, ostensibly because they are lazy.  Or in my case, have a boatload of bad habits that I am disinclined to worry about during the drafting phases.

Also, in yesterday's post, I said I'd talk about those words here today.  Yah, I'm airing my dirty laundry.   Shtuff happens.

Anyway, here are some of the words my editor came up with this time around...

just - 152/56
even - 155/39
like - 290/110
then - 221/43
know - 135/45
again - 159/60

The first number is how many instance of that word I found when I highlighted them all.  The second number is how many I found AFTER I'd finished tweaking.  It took me about 6 hours over 2 days of finding and rewording.

She did point out some words that I didn't bother with.  When I did a search of 'took', for instance, I only found 39 of those.  Compared to 'like', 39 was a non-issue.  Plus, I'm tired and a little cranky.  I apologize if the word irritates you.

I also apologize to anyone who isn't overly fond of the word 'like'.  (Which, btw, includes child-like, likeable, etc.)  But there were places I just couldn't bring myself to change.  And the sentence "I like him, but I don't like him like him' chalked up 3 all by itself.

I really do try to make these books the best they can be.  But, as I say in my front matter, "Any flaws or fiascos in grammar, punctuation, spelling, research, etc. are entirely the fault of the author.  My editor probably pointed them out, and the author was too stubborn to change them."  I am kinda stubborn sometimes, as AWE will attest to.

Anyway, I hope that gives you a little insight into the pre-publication process.  Authors really are out there working to make your reading experience as awesome as you hope it will be.  Thanks for reading.

And for an update... Once I read through this one more time, checking to make sure I didn't insert errors while I was fixing errors, I will be able to upload this for sale.  Check back throughout the week to see where that process is at.  When I know it's live on Amazon, you'll know it.

News and Stuff

AWE (Awesome Wonderful Editor) got my edits back to me yesterday morning.  I hit them hard last night and I'm already through chapter 3, so I'm ahead of schedule to meet my self-imposed deadline of September 14th.  If I get it done sooner, you'll get a chance to buy it sooner.  Yay!

If you want an Advance Review Copy - one without all of the final edits, but still pretty much done - let me know and I'll shoot you a PDF.  I give you a copy, you give me an honest review.  K?

Oh, and since I didn't mention it, it's the ARC for Up Wish Creek (Once Upon a Djinn #3).  Here's the blurb I came up with:

For Jo Mayweather, genie life is far from perfect, but it was finally beginning to settle down after the incident where she accidentally glassed over part of the Florida Panhandle.  Her enemies have been quiet.  The Djinn Council has left her alone.  Her traitorous ex-lover has disappeared.  Finally, she has time to figure out who’s behind the conspiracy to ruin her life.  But setting her feet on that trail means discovering things from her past she’d rather not know, facing her parents in their newest incarnations, and getting a mission from the gods that she’s not sure she can complete.  All in a day’s work, right?  Sometimes Jo wishes she had a different occupation.  Too bad wishes don’t work that way.

It's up at Goodreads, if you want to add it to your 'Want to Read' list.

Right now, the other two books in the series - Wish in One Hand and In Deep Wish - are still 99 cents each.  I'll be making Up Wish Creek 99 cents, too, but only for a limited time.  Shop early, shop often.  Of course, when I raise prices again, they'll only be $2.99 each, so if you miss the sale, you won't be killing yourself.

I will be putting a newsletter out.  Eventually.  It'll have stuff in it.  If you want to see what kinds of stuff, click the newsletter button up there near the top, fill out the form, submit.  Easy peasy.

And just for reading all the way to here, I'll give you a chance to win a paperback copy of one of my books.  Just comment and I'll draw a name next week.

Release Update

Last night I turned in the edits for Up Wish Creek.  14 days after I got the edit notes from my editor.  I'm pretty floored.  I have never turned around editing that fast.  Not the first round of editor edits anyway.  The last round goes quicker, naturally.  It's all commas and typos and 'hey, did you mean to put that there?'

I already knew I could write 50K words in a month - thanks to NaNoWriMo - but I wasn't sure I could do this.  I had hopes.  I had foolish dreams that I could turn it around in a week.  (Ummm, yah.  That was kinda crazypants.)  But I did it.  I edited 212 pages in 2 weeks.

What this means for you?  Well, she'll have the final round back to me on the 30th*.  If I bust ass like I did these past two weeks, I should be able to have this book in your hands before the 14th of September.  So only like a week later than my plan of having this out by Labor Day.  I won't put it up for pre-order this time.  It'll just be live when it goes live.  It's quicker that way.  Trust me.

Basically, what I'm saying is....  ONE MONTH!

And I think you'll really like this one.  I know I really like it.  Jo's at it again... and well... things happen...

Ack, I need to write the marketing copy for this.  I'm so totally hosed on that.  Massive muse failure.  She's sleeping it off somewhere, I'm sure.

Anyway, I'll have it ready in plenty of time.  Meanwhile, here's the pretty cover again**.

*Huge thanks to Janet at Pink Pencil Editing for giving me a quicker turnaround time than usual.  This is part of the reason why I call her AWE (Awesome Wonderful Editor).

** Huge thanks also to Jessica Allain at Enchanted Whispers Art.  She rocked the hell out of my covers.  Way better experience than with the dude who did the initial cover for Wish in One Hand

Snippets Change Sometimes

Last Friday, I posted a snippet of Up Wish Creek's first chapter over at Killer Chicks.  Last night, I revised that bit.

Here's what you saw last Friday:

It had been about a month since the shitstorm blew through and I turned a portion of North Florida into glass.  And there I was sitting in my library, trying to interrogate a book.  My ex-lover, who betrayed me, was nowhere to be found.  Not that I’d had time to look.  Which was probably for the best because I was so ready to kick his olive-brown ass. The last time I saw my dog he’d been transformed back into a gorgeous genie, and he was panting after the only surviving twin goddess of a long-extinct Nubian tribe.  My conniving former best friend was still a bitch—literally—and sleeping curled up on the rug in front of the fireplace.  But the more things change… Well, let’s just say things were working the way they’d always worked.  Life as a genie is long, but hey, unless you really work at it, it’s not boring.

Sometimes I wish I put forth the effort.

“Did the book tell you anything yet?” The only constant in my life, the right-proper Basil Hadresham shouted from another room.  He was my business partner, decades-long friend, and genie extraordinaire.  And he’d spent the past thirty some odd years keeping my life on an even keel.  Even if he did have a bad habit of bellowing through my home like a kid who’s too lazy to grab a snack from the kitchen.

“I heard you,” I shouted back because I was too lazy.  “And the answer is no. Did you get anything out of that damn dog yet?”

Basil entered my library with the dog in question trailing behind him.  “The bitch is being bloody difficult.”

She will tell you nothing, appeared across the blank page of the book in front of me.  Just as you will learn nothing from me.

“And here I was thinking you’d want to brag a little,” I said back to what was, in reality, a former genie who’d chosen to become an Efreet.  Since genies can’t apply the death penalty the way Efreet can, Amun got sentenced to spending a good long while as a smart-mouth, uptight, pain in my ass book.  I’d taken a bit of shit for going off-script and making him reading material instead of the family pet, but, hey, he deserved it.

Here's what it looks like now:

About a month had passed since the shitstorm blew through and I turned part of North Florida into glass.  My ex-lover, who betrayed me, couldn’t be found anywhere.  Not that I’d bothered to look.  Probably the best thing for both of us, because I would kick his olive-brown ass, if I ever caught up to him. The last time I saw my dog he’d been transformed back into a gorgeous genie, and he was panting after the only surviving twin goddess of a long-extinct Nubian tribe.  My conniving, former best friend was still a bitch—literally—and spending her nights curled up on the rug in front of my fireplace.  And there I was sitting in my library, trying to interrogate a book.
The more things change… Well, let’s just say things were working the way they’d always worked.  Which was to say, dysfunctional.  With extra funk.  Life as a genie is long, but hey, unless you really work at it, it’s not boring.
Sometimes I wish I put forth the effort.
The only stable constant in my life, the right-proper Basil Hadresham shouted from another room.  “Did the book tell you anything yet?” My business partner, decades-long friend, and genie extraordinaire had spent the past thirty some odd years keeping my life on an even keel.  Even if he did have a bad habit of bellowing through my home like a kid who’s too lazy to grab a snack from the kitchen.
“I heard you,” I shouted back because I was too lazy.  “And the answer is no.”
Basil entered my library with a scrawny, beige pooch trailing behind him.  He looked like a forty-something British barrister, all tweed-covered and balding with a paunch that would make any Cornish wife proud.  In reality, he looked like a young and sexy Michael York, heavy on the Cockney and light on the stodgy. But we all wear the costumes we must to hide who we really are.
Hell, I made myself look about twenty years older than I really was.  And I would age a little every day until I faked my own death and started over with a brand new face.
“Did you get anything out of that damn dog yet?” I asked.
Basil laced his fingers over his ample belly. “The bitch is being bloody difficult.”
She will tell you nothing, appeared across the blank page of the book in front of me.  As you will learn nothing from me.
“And here I was thinking you’d want to brag a little,” I replied to what was, in reality, a former genie who’d chosen to become an Efreet.  Since genies can’t apply the death penalty the way Efreet can, Amun got sentenced to spending a good long while as a smart-mouth, uptight, pain-in-my-ass book.  I’d taken quite a bit of guff for going off-script and transforming him into reading material instead of the family pet, but, hey, he got what he deserved.

And that's what writers do.  You know, when they aren't writing new words.  I spent 3 hours last night doing stuff like that to the first 30 pages.  Today, I will try to get the rest of the pages done.  As long as my eyes and my will to live hold out.  LOL

That will probably be as close to out the door as you can get.  Unless my editor looks at that and tells me something's wrong somewhere.  Fingers crossed.

Now, back into the editing cave.

Monday Snippet - Up Wish Creek

Since I'm at a loss for fun and interesting things to post, here's a peek at Up Wish Creek...

“Did you get anything out of that damn book yet?”  I heard the shout echo through my cavernous home and returned a shout of my own.
It had been about a month since the shitstorm blew through and I turned a portion of North Florida into glass.  My ex-lover who betrayed me was nowhere to be seen.  Which was probably for the best because I was ready to kick his ass. The last time I saw my dog he looked like a Norse god, and he was panting after the only surviving twin goddess of a long-extinct Nubian tribe.  My conniving former best friend was still a bitch—literally.  But the more things change… Well, let’s just say things were working the way they’d always worked.  Life as a genie is long, but hey, unless you really work at it, it’s not boring.
Sometimes I wish I put forth the effort.
“Oy, Jo?” said the only constant in my life.  The right-proper Basil Hadresham was my business partner, decades-long friend, and genie extraordinaire.  Plus, he spent the past thirty some odd years keeping my life on an even keel.  Even if he did have a bad habit of shouting through my abode.
“I heard you.  And the answer is no,” I shouted back.  “Did you get anything out of that damn dog yet?”
“The bitch is being bloody difficult.” Basil entered my library with the dog in question trailing behind him.
She will tell you nothing, I saw written across the blank page of the book in front of me.  Just as you will learn nothing from me.
“And here I was thinking you’d want to brag a little,” I said back to what was in reality a former genie who’d chosen to become an Efreet, one I’d transformed into a sentient tome to keep him from killing me.  Since genies can’t apply the death penalty the way Efreet can, Amun got sentenced to spending a good long while as a smart-mouth, uptight, pain in my ass book.  I’d taken a bit of shit for going off-script and making him reading material inside of the family pet, but, hey, he deserved it.
Once upon a time, that dog beside Basil, Mena, had been my best friend, until she went to the dark side.  I guess they really did have better cookies.  Once she made it clear which side of good and evil she played for, she got the old fashioned sentence of being transformed into a pooch.  It wasn’t my idea, but it had worked for djinn-kind for centuries—until I came up with the book idea.
Books are easier to take care of, and they only mouth off to you if you open their covers and read what they have to say.  Plus, they are way less messy.  Proving my point, Mena decided to do her business on my rug.
“Bad dog,” I said, conjuring a rolled-up newspaper and making it whack her on the nose.
“Bitch,” she said back to me.  “I hate when you do that.”
“I hated when you betrayed me and got people killed, so I guess I win.”  I whacked her again for good measure and then let the newspaper unfurl itself on the floor.  “If you have to go again, use that.”
“As if.”

My editor hasn't touched that yet, so go easy on me.

Anyway, I hope you enjoyed it a little and I hope to have this available by Labor Day.  I know it seems like a long way off, but AWE takes a month to get the first round of edits back to me, I do my thing, and she takes another 3 weeks to get the second round back to me.  Then I do my thing again, format the sucker, and upload it.  This stuff takes time.  I wish I could make it faster, but I do want this to be as good a book as possible before readers slap down good money for it.  You understand that, right?
